Do you want to start welcoming more wildlife? If so then there are a few things you can do to try and do your bit. If you don’t know where to start or if you want to make sure that you are creating a sanctuary for all creatures great and small then this is the guide for you.
Plant Native Vegetation
One of the best things you can do for your local garden is to try and introduce native plants where possible. Immaculate gardens tend to harbor a huge range of plant species that outcompete a lot of native wildflowers. Plants like this might look great but at the same time, what pollinators need is plants that are native. They need plants that they have evolved to feed from. For this reason, when spring comes along, you need to try and give them a helping hand. It may be that you plant some wild garlic and herbs. If you can do this then you will be able to benefit local wildlife quite a lot. If you aren’t sure where to start then one thing you can do is look up what local wildlife is in your area and then take steps to plant things that cater for these types of animals. If you can do this then you will soon find that it is easier for you to do your bit for the environment which is great, to say the least.

Build a Hideaway
Hedgehogs are usually one of the nation’s favorite mammals but it is estimated that their numbers have depleted quite a lot. They now need your help more than ever. One way for you to do your bit for them would be for you to create a hedgehog hideaway. You can build a hole in your fenced gardens for the hedgehogs to go through and when you do this, you will soon find that it is easier for you to help them get from one place to the next. This also means that they are not going to get stuck in urban gardens. Remember that hedgehogs are capable of traveling up to a mile every single night, so if you can give them the option to travel freely through your garden then this is a great way for you to be able to help them out.
Let Your Garden Grow
Letting your garden grow is one of the best ways for you to encourage wildflower growth. It is also the best way for you to protect wildlife that call your home, theirs. Newts, frogs, dormice and even worms are just a few of the smaller animals who could well be harmed if you mow your grass and start digging up the mud in flower beds. If you can have longer grass then this will give animals the shelter they need and it also gives the best environment for amphibians too. If you want to help wildlife, leave your lawnmower in the shed for now. If you want to take things to that next level then build a pond. Put a slab of wood in there so that animals can climb in and out with ease, and you will soon find that it is easier for you to help them thrive. If you want to use wood that will not swell or split with time then marine plywood would be a good shout.
Care for Birds
Putting out a range of different bird feeds is the best way for you to attract a range of different birds to the garden. You can also help out bird populations at the same time so you can do your bit for the local environment. When you have introduced a food source to your garden, you will soon notice that all kinds of birds begin to appear. If you want to help the wildlife in your garden then one thing you can do is simply try and prioritize the times of the year that you put feed out. During droughts and cold spells, birds find it very hard to find food, so if you can care for them during this difficult time then you are bound to be able to help them going forward. A lot of birds in the country are threatened, so if you can give them a lot of support then you will soon find that it is easier for you to help them.
Let it Be
A key tip when it comes to restoring your garden is to let it be. Don’t do anything. Nature has been around for a very long time without any kind of human management and it is safe to say that it is going to be around for a long time after us as well. If you want to help nature then make sure that you don’t de-weed or care for your pristine flowers. Let your garden be and make sure that you care for your flower beds where possible. If you can put down the hedge clippers and trust in nature, you’ll soon find that it is easier than ever for you to care for your garden. If you look around and notice that your garden is buzzing already with bees and hedgehogs then why not ask others to see if they can give you some help as to how you could take things to that next level? If you can do this then you may be able to get some solid advice which will help you out a lot later down the line.
Butterfly-Friendly
If you can focus on trying to make your garden as butterfly-friendly as you can then this will help you to attract other pollinators. If you want to attract butterflies then you need to first attract caterpillars. These tend to be picky and you may find that there are only a few types of plant species that they end up feeding on. Brimstone butterflies will only lay their eggs on a type of buckthorn bush, so make sure that you keep this in mind. Ultimately, you need to remember that planting a huge array of plant species and flowers is going to help you maximize the chances of getting a variety of wildlife visiting our garden

Make the Most out of compost
Creating a nice big compost heap in your garden is the best way for you to attract a lot of wildlife. Creating a compost heap will stop waste from going to the landfill and it will also create a haven for any c=reatures you have within your garden. If you want to attract more spiders, woodlice and millipedes then this is a great way for you to go about it. A lot of people wonder why they would want to attract creatures like this, but at the end of the day, it is a great way for you to make sure that the wildlife in your garden has access to a lot of different food sources. Worms are great as they help to create compost out of leaves and various other types of organic material. They will also wriggle into your compost heap. Spreading home-made compost around the garden will encourage worms and you may even find that this works wonders if you want to improve drainage. Important nutrients can be brought to the surface and this is great, to say the least. If you can attract slugs then this is a great food source for ground beetles and toads. Thrushes will eat snails too. Just make sure that you avoid using snail or slug pesticides as things like this can be toxic to other forms of wildlife and it can cause a big issue if you provide a source of drinking water. If you want to start a compost heap over using a bin then make sure that this is a warm spot for animals such as hedgehogs. Be mindful about moving around the compost, especially during winter months. If you can do this then you will soon find that it is easier for you to make your garden into a wildlife haven.
Help Nocturnal Creatures
Honeysuckle and even evening primrose all bloom at night and they release a lot of their scent when the sun sets. This helps to attract a lot of pollinating insects. If you want to attract creatures such as bats then you need to use this to your advantage. You can also remove any artificial lighting from your garden and around your property as this will encourage them to visit your garden even more. If you can keep things like this in mind then you will soon find that it is easier for you to give them the environment they need to thrive, which is so important if you want to do your bit for the environment. If you want to take things to that next level then give some thought to the wildlife you’d like to attract and what food source it is. If you can do this then you will soon see a huge improvement as to what you can do to help the animals in your garden.
